Peter Ouma, his wife and four children live in Nagubimbi Village, Lunyo, Uganda. Peter and his wife both tested HIV positive. The family struggled coming to terms with the diagnosis and when both parents started falling ill, the family funds started to dwindle. It was difficult for either parent to gain regular work. The older two children dropped out of school because it was simply too expensive and the family resorted to eating fewer meals a day to save. The situation looked bleak.
Children within the ADP are monitored and once the situation was brought to the community committee’s attention, they stepped into action immediately. Peter and his family received a piglet from the World Vision Gift Catalogue. A piglet is ideal in this situation as they are low cost to feed and easy to manage.
This sow has truly been a life saver. It has already reproduced five times with an average of 8 piglets each time. Peter has been able to sell four piglets, using the proceeds to ensure that two of his children continued going to school.
As is the World Vision philosophy, Peter distributes extra piglets to other vulnerable households, who in turn, pass on offspring, and so on.
Peter told us that this gift has restored hope and unity in his family, besides a regular income. “Even I can afford the basic necessities for my family without much struggle from home. The piglet has changed our lives and I thank you for it!”
Child protection is at the heart of what we do. It is important that all members of the community understand how to report child abuse cases and that support is provided to children. We will continue our work in the area through awareness campaigns and developing trust between the police and public.
Lunyo ADP in Uganda is only in its fourth year of development. Still great strides have already been made. View our photo gallery to see some examples.
