In 2008, 200 Irish people showed the true meaning of Christmas by choosing 200 piglets for children in Africa. These children were specifically chosen as they were particularly vulnerable to the affects of HIV and AIDS having lost one or both parents to the deadly disease and now live with other family members who struggle to feed an extra child.
The families and guardians of the children all took part in an agriculture training course before the piglets were put into their care. There they were trained on how to care for and breed the animals as well as learning the ins and outs of selling pigs and pork products at local markets.
Once the piglets are mature and have produced piglets of their own, the families can decide to slaughter some of their pigs to improve the families' diets or they have the exciting opportunity to start a small business by selling piglets and pork products at local markets.
