World Vision Ireland would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Garret Fitgerald, who passed away this morning.
“A great man, Garret was an example of integrity and vision to so many people especially those in public and political life” says Helen Keogh, CEO of World Vision Ireland.
In 1974, as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Garret was responsible for introducing Ireland's development aid programme.
He remained committed to social justice throughout his life and last year helped over 60 anti-poverty organisations by launching the Act Now on 2015 campaign, which calls on the Government to deliver on its promise to reach the UN target of spending 0.7% of national income on overseas aid by 2015.
He will be sadly missed. RIP
