World leaders are set to meet this week at the 65th United Nations General Assembly in New York to review progress made towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) announced in 2000 to halve extreme poverty by 2015.

Between Sept 20 and 22 UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will convene the MDG Summit to see what progress governments, donors and stakeholders have made towards achieving the MDG goals. Strategies to facilitate their achievement during the next five years will also be announced.

Maternal & Child Health

Although many of the targets are on track, MDGs 4 and 5—aimed at improving child and maternal health—are still lagging.

World Vision, will highlight the plight of mothers and children at this year’s UNGA. With its new report, World Vision focuses on the critical role of family and community care as the ‘missing link’ necessary to achieve MDG goals four and five. You can download the report here.

World Vision Ireland Chief Executive, Helen Keogh, is attending the summit as part of the Irish Government delegation. Helen will be representing Dochas, the umbrella organisation for aid agencies in Ireland.
