Caring about East Africa

27 July 2011

Roberta Tuckey from our Supporter Care Team is part of our East Africa Crisis response team. Editors Note: Roberta Tuckey from our Supporter Care team reflects on the generosity and compassion of our supporters who have been calling the office in response to our Horn of Africa appeal.

Working in Supporter Care for World Vision Ireland is a job that never fails to reinforce my belief in people and how generous they can be.

The current crisis in the Horn of Africa has highlighted, once again, that all so many of us want, is to help our fellow human beings and to end needless suffering.

Donations

Every day people are calling the office to donate money and express their concern. Some of them are struggling to make ends meet here, yet they still donate their last €20.00 to help families suffering from the devastating drought in East Africa.

People may not think that €20.00 is much but it can provide supplementary food for a malnourished child in Somalia for 2 months!

Compassion

Our supporters and donors seem to come from every walk of life but no matter where they are from or what their personal circumstances are, I am always genuinely humbled by their compassion for others.

It’s clear that their donations make a real difference to the lives of the communities we work with in East Africa but I wonder do they realise the difference they are making to my life too.
