Hudhayfah (13) is an inspiring and intelligent child living in Azaz IDP camp in North West Syria. When he heard about the Child Friendly Space (CFS), he asked his parents if he could be part of it and play there with other children. Every day, he would ask to go to the centre early as he is a very social child and has great ambitions and dreams.
Under the EMPOWER! project, funded by Irish Aid, Hudhayfah participates in sensory play activities and games adapted to his movement limitations. These activities served as physical and motor therapy for him, as advised by his doctors. At home, his family noticed an improvement on his behaviour as he shared what he was learning. “He became more understanding and patient among other children and his communication with his family improved, as he began asking his brothers to play with him,” said his caregiver.

Hudhayfah was able to build friendships with other children after being isolated because he was behind his peers. “He began to express his feelings through gameplay and improved his speaking skills. Facilitators and peers played the greatest role in encouraging him to do this. These centres enhance children’s confidence and self-esteem as they learn to be social, empathetic and more communicative. They provide protection to children and contribute to children’s integration into society, especially for those with a disability” said his caregiver, who is also participating in awareness sessions given by the EMPOWER! project on gender based violence.
Thanks to the services provided by the CFS, Hudhayfah has a safe space to play in. In these centres, a strong bond is formed between the children, the families and the facilitators, creating a positive environment for children and restoring their right to play.
