Meet twins, Mohamed and Minatou from Mauritania
They enjoy playing with their friends, Moussa and Aminata, and eating their favourite foods – rice with fish for Mohamed and couscous for Minatou.
As you can imagine, their mother, Zeinabou, was quite surprised when she found out she was having twins. As this was her first pregnancy she was glad to have the support of her Community Health Worker, Maimouna, who visited her regularly – advising her on things like nutrition during her pregnancy, the importance of antenatal care and being prepared for delivery. If it was not for Maimouna, she does not think she would have gone to the health centre for her antenatal care visits and would probably have had complications.
When the twins were born, Maimouna continued to visit the family giving advice on breastfeeding and vaccinations for the children.
When they grow up, Mohamed would like to take care of animals while Minatou just wants the chance to go to school. Their mum hopes they will be healthy and educated. She especially hopes that her daughter will continue her studies because she was not able to.
Thank you for making this possible. Without Irish Aid funded programmes like AIM Health Plus, Mohamed’s and Minatou’s chances of a healthy start to life could have been very different.
