Sustainable Development Goals

Together with 25 partners across 15 countries, World Vision Ireland is part of Make Europe Sustainable for All, a three year EU-funded project that aims to raise awareness and promote action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year’s campaign #WardrobeChange focuses on SDG12 and calls for radical transformation of the textile industry.

While the textile industry has lifted millions out of poverty and employs more than 300 million people along its value chain, it is also responsible for more than 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2, which is more than that of international flights and maritime shipping combined. In 2018 alone, Irish household bins contained 80,000 tonnes of textile waste. More than 73% of the produced clothes end up landfilled or incinerated, having a catastrophic impact on people and the planet.

Today’s production and consumption patterns are not sustainable and call for radical transformation because fashion should not cost the earth.

Global Goals

The Global Goals, also known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are a universal plan of action for people and planet to be achieved by the year 2030. These 17 goals aim to end poverty, combat climate change and ensure that we leave peaceful, just and equal societies for future generations.

These goals are universal in nature, applying to developed and developing countries alike, and place sustainable development at their core.

They are backed up by 169 specific targets which address challenges in areas as diverse as poverty, education, human rights, food security, clean energy, climate, peace, sustainable consumption and urbanization.

They provide clear guidelines for all countries to adopt in accordance with their own priorities and circumstances.

Never before has the world come together to agree on such a comprehensive agenda. The goals are ambitious, but they are attainable. Success in delivering on the goals, which will require the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike, has the potential to be one of the most important turning points in modern history
